SO behind the times

So I did something last night that I haven’t done in a really long time.

You ready?

I went to karaoke night.

Yes, I’m hanging my head in shame. Or, actually, I’m not, because it was really FUN. And part of that, of course, was the company, because I happened to be with some of the most upbeat, fun people EVER.

Anyway.

I didn’t sing because I’m a big fat chicken who’s so out-of-practice that my voice, at this point, probably bears strong similarities to the yowls of a dying cat, but I did have the pleasure of hearing the “suave vocal stylings”  (thanks, Jeremy) of some good friends. …Not that I knew most of the songs that were sung.

Let’s focus on that last sentence.

“Not that I knew most of the songs that were sung.” Really — what?? Do we know who I AM? I’m the girl who owned 500 CDs in high school. I hated MTV but watched it religiously to “stay updated.” I loved and loathed and grudgingly respected the music industry of the mid-to-late nineties and had every intention of becoming a top A&R rep for a major label. I went to college FOR Music Industry, for krist’s sake.

I have this coworker, who happened to be with us last night, and she’s 19 and fairly adorable and whatnot, and she’s always giving me this look that plainly says, “OH MY GOD WHAT ROCK ARE YOU LIVING UNDER YOU’RE ONLY 25 I KNOW GRANDMOTHERS WHO ARE TRENDIER THAN YOU.” (Like, really, who the hell is Chris Brown?)

I turned on our local Top 40 station the other day and actually cringed — this is what tweens today are listening to? (“Wait, who are the Gin Blossoms??”) Horrifying.

But then, of course, there are the super-fun little gems like my obsession of the past two weeks, “Before He Cheats.” (I’m only a year late.)

So here’s my question to all of you: What fun songs do you recommend? I love my graceful, melodic indie rock, but really, sometimes a girl just needs to get sexy and rock out. (Or something.)

Leave ‘em in the comments, people — I’m desperate! ;)

  1. Ohh, I must say, Before He Cheats is a fun little number. ;)

Hmm… I hate to tell you, radio hits are just not good. Music is just so non-original. I tend to just find things (mostly by accident). I happen to really LOVE music that plays in the background for thirty seconds on television shows. ;) You’d be surprised the good stuff you can find on there!

If you’re looking for more modern, up to date quality stuff, I’d recommend Pink. I know, you’re probably thinking, what?! But I swear, some of her songs are great and they definitely have that sexy, rocking out quality. There are three that I love on her new album: Long Way to Happy, I’m Not Dead, and The One That Got Away. Those are GREAT songs. The last one is actually an acoustic guitar song with some adorable lyrics. It’s just a fun song.

I’m also a HUGE Kelly Clarkson advocate. I know she gets a lot of slack for being a ‘karaoke’ winner, in essence, but the girl’s got pipes. Her new album has the every so catchy, Never Again, but I’d also recommend Haunted, Maybe, and Chivas. Ohhhh, Chivas. It’s definitely along the Before He Cheats vein. “Don’t know what I saw, but I ain’t seeing it now, woke up this morning bitterness in my mouth, guess I fell too fast, guess I learned my lesson, so much for true love, I’ll take the Chivas instead… ” :) Good stuff! Ha ha.

For something a little more obscure, less radio-ish, I’ve really been into Vienna Teng lately. She’s got some amazingly beautiful songs and the lyrics kick serious poetic booty. Poets of the Fall are pretty great. They’re a Norwegian rock band I think. The Pierces are awesome. Their old album and the new one are both worth a listen. Their songs Save Me and Three Wishes are just magic. *shivers* I love it.

So yea. Ha ha. That’s my piece. My very LONG piece. I think I’m going to make you a mix tape. ;) Because mix tapes are love. But of course, it’ll be on CD. ;)
